Bay runners make XC debut

EAST LANSING – The Bay Norse cross country teams opened their season here Friday at Michigan State. Four women scored for the Norse, while three runners on the men’s side put up official times.

The harriers faced hot and steamy conditions, adding to the difficulty of running in a huge field of competitors.

Returning for her second season, sophomore Zoie Berg of Gladstoneled the women with a 6K time of 27:06. Freshman Lauren Cousineau of Escanaba crossed the line in 31:17.

Two other women also placed in their first collegiate race. Freshman Lauren Peters of Munising finished in 32:02 and sophomore Jody Peters of Gladstone ended in 34:33.

Freshman James Young of Gladstone paced the Norse with an 8K time of 33:07.

Freshman Connor Robinson of Powers finished in 34:49 while sophomore Steven Magnuson of Cheboygan finish in 38:05.

“Today went well considering the conditions,” said Norse coach Jim Murtha. “Everyone gave their best effort, but it was very hot and humid by race time. Our times are only going to keep getting better as the season goes on. We are definitely looking forward to our home meet next weekend.”

The Quality Inn & Suites Invitational will be Sept. 22 at 10 a.m.
