West Iron County, Westwood tie at Kingsford tennis invite

KINGSFORD — West Iron County and Westwood, two of the favorites in UP Division 2 girls tennis this fall, battled to a tie for first Friday in the Kingsford Invitational on Friday.

The Wykons and Patriots each tallied 41 points, followed by Kingsford 25, Iron Mountain 21, Menominee 20 and Escanaba 19.

West Iron County captured first singles with Kat Serbentas, third with Izzy Hoogenboom and fourth with Livea Mazurek along with No. 2 doubles Emily Nelson-Anna Malmquist. Westwood came out on top in two singles with Tessa Leece plus three doubles with Ellie Miller-Meghan Johnson and four with Claire Gilles-Jenna Wealton.

“West Iron County and Westwood both have strong and experienced teams, and their depth showed through today,” said Kingsford Coach Sarah Massie. “It was a beautiful day for tennis and there were a lot of great matches that took place.”

Grace Lorenzoni-Mackenzie Schwamlien led Kingsford, bowing to Iron Mountain’s Saylor Swartout-Claire Mongrain in the No. 1 doubles finals.

“With the level of competition and the inexperience we have in some of our flights, I was very pleased with how we finished,” Massie said.
