Tech receives award from military vets

CHASSELL – The Copper Country Veterans Association presented the Michigan Tech Athletics Department with a plaque for the departments work on Military Appreciation Weekend this past November. Gary Kruzich, Director of Athletic Partnerships and Ticket Sales, represented Tech in accepting the plaque from CCVA President Bill Cole and Treasurer Jim Pintar on Saturday.

“It is an honor to give back to our Military after all they do for us,” Kruzich said. “A veteran from the Korean War stopped me to thank Michigan Tech for such a great event and donation. I replied to him, thank you but you are the ones we need to thank, you were in Korea for over a year dodging bullets for our freedom. It is because of our Military we have the freedom to put on such events.”

Michigan Tech raised over $4,000 last November through an auction that featured a special camouflage hockey jersey worn during a 4-1 victory over Northern Michigan. The funds are going to be used by the CCVA to install five flag poles in Veteran’s Park, one representing each branch of service.

The poles will be lighted and serve as a pathway to the wall, which has the names of those who made the supreme sacrifice four our country. In addition, they will serve as a remembrance to CCVA members that have answered the last call, with names on each pole according to their service. A marker indicating Michigan Tech’s contribution to the project will also be placed at Veteran’s Park.
