Rookies earn top honors in US Log Rolling Open

GLADSTONE — Two upsets highlighted the recent third annual US Log Rolling Open at Gladstone’s Van Cleve Park.

Anthony Polentini of Oconomowoc, Wis., upset reigning US Log Rolling Open champion Connor Birdsong of Onalaska, Wis., 3-0 in the Men’s Division. This was a repeat final of the first tournament of the year, with Polentini coming out on the winning side. He is a 16-year-old rookie competitor.

Another rookie won the Women’s Division title — Livi Pappadopoulos of Holmen, Wis., defeated Ellie Davenport of Hudson, Wis. Davenport was the 2016 runner-up and the 2017 US Log Rolling Open champion.

Birdsong and Pappadopoulos have been rolling together since their early amateur days at the La Crosse, Wis.,YMCA and Onalaska Park and Rec program.

A field of 23 competitors ventured to Gladstone from across the country, including New York, Connecticut, Oregon, Florida and California. A majority of the competitors were from Wisconsin.

Log rolling returned to Gladstone for this July 4 event after a 19-year absence.

The tournament was co-directed by Dan McDonough for Jack Pine Lumberjack Shows in Mackinaw City and Katie Rick of KRICK log rolling in Onalaska, Wis.
