Women’s softball

GLADSTONE — Elmer’s County Market came out like gangbusters Tuesday night, romping past Ernie’s Irish Pub 17-0 in the first game of a doubleheader in the Women’s Slowpitch Softball League.

The winners needed just four innings to secure the opener as they exploded for 14 runs in the opening frame and added three in the third. Lauren Parrett, Lorrie Botruff and Kara Salo had two hits each for Elmer’s. Jen Koish doubled for Ernie’s.

The nightcap was much more competitive as Elmer’s needed eight innings to earn a 12-9 victory. Elmer’s completed the sweep by scoring three times in the eighth. The teams were tied at 9 after seven. The winners led 4-0 after three innings. Ernie’s then scored three times in the fourth and fifth for a 6-4 lead.

Elmer’s regained the lead at 8-6 with four runs in the sixth before Ernie’s tied the contest in its half of the inning. Each team then score a run in the seventh to force the extra frame.

Bridget Becker collected four hits, including a home run, triple and double for Elmer’s, which improved to 5-1. Kelley Spettel added three hits, including a double, and Chelsie Bosanic had two hits.

Christy Forvilly and Mary Feurbach led Ernie’s (2-5-1) with three hits each.
