Trio earns crown at rainy ECC

Golf

ESCANABA — Tyler Way, Jim Brayak and Larry Bratonia beat the field and rainy weather to capture the Cooney Hogan Tournament Sunday at Escanaba Country Club.

The trio combined for a winning score of 119 to finish three strokes ahead of second-place Matt Eugate-Jim Aird-Scott Lancour 124.

Rounding out the top five in the championship flight were third-place Mark Gauthier Jr.-Dylan Gauthier-Nick Aird 124, fourth-place Don Lemire-Jordan Lemire-Matt Jensen 125 and fifth-place Rick Boney-Brad Robinette-Kevin Robinette 126.

The field endured an eight-hour storm delay Saturday, but play was completed so the tourney could be flighted for Sunday’s final round. It required an 80-team shotgun start on Saturday, with the final group turning in its scorecard at 10:06 p.m.

“It was a very long day, but everyone stayed patient and understood there was not much we could do about the weather,” said ECC’s Jeff Rae. “On Sunday, the final group came in 10 minutes before another major storm. Mother Nature tested us but we worked around it all weekend.”
