Football all-star game details set, 21 area gridders in classic

MARQUETTE — The U.P. Football All-Star Game has finalized the schedule and players for this year’s event, to be played Saturday, in Marquette at the Superior Dome.

2018 marks the 11th anniversary of the U.P. summer football classic. This year, the players selected as all-stars were again drafted by the coaches, just like NFL fantasy football leagues and players are either on the Red Team or the Black Team.

Twenty-one area football players were selected for the all-star game with13 area gridders selected for the Red team. They include Escanaba’s Josh Grassel, Cody Vandermissen, John Schlenvogt and Scott Wunder; Gladstone’s Jared Demeuse, Darin Johnson and Jeff Stenson; Rapid River’s Logan Hardwick, Gavin Harris, Jarrett LaCasse and Lucas Sundling; Super Central’s Ramsey Luft and North Central’s Hunter Riley.

Esky’s Neil Clapp and Bay College women’s basketball coach Rae Drake will be on the Red team coaching staff.

The Black Team has eight area players on the all-star roster. They are Bark River-Harris’s Ryan Arndt and Mike Hall; Esky’s Logan Carroll and Hayden Haslow; Gladstone’s Alex Chouinard and Spencer Husbye; Manistique’s Kyle Seeley and Superior Central’s Wade Krysiak.

Bark River-Harris’ Al Stenberg, Bob Maycraft and Kevin Mileski are on the Black Team’s coaching staff.

The draft was held on March 18 in Marquette and the unique format included having the players “mixed” by the draft means not only will players be competing against traditional rivals from other schools, they might also be competing against players from their own school.

Game time is set for 1 p.m., on Saturday with the Superior Dome doors opening at noon for fans and players’ family members.

The U.P. Football All-Star Game will also be donating proceeds to the following U.P. charities: Beacon House, The U.P. Sports Hall of Fame, as well as Westwood and Menominee High Schools.

A lottery drawing was performed to select the two schools, and donations will be made directly to the football program of those schools chosen.

Each year, new schools will be chosen until all U.P. schools have received benefits from the game. Several other schools (Bark River-Harris, Gogebic, Ontonagon and West Iron County) will also receive donations in the form of All-Star Game equipment, including the practice jerseys and footballs.
