Bay baseball gets 13 commitments

ESCANABA — The Bay College baseball team has added 13 names to the list of signed players for its inaugural season in 2018-19.

“I am very excited about the core of this team,” said head coach Mike Pankow. “The young men that have either signed their letter of intent or verbally committed are talented and will help us bring an exciting brand of baseball for next season. I am proud to say that with the total of 15 signed players and 10 verbal commitments, our numbers are looking great for next year and we will be fielding an extremely talented and competitive team. I look forward to working with each and every one of our Bay College baseball commits in the near future.”

Jeff Allen, a 2015 of downstate Watervliet Senior High School, carried a .298 batting average, collected 69 hits and drove in 72 runs. Allen was originally recruited to play at a two-year school in Kansas, but an off-season injury forced a change of plans.

Logan Bailey of Sault Ste. Marie was selected Co-player of the Year in the Straits Area Conference a year ago. He has played nearly every position on the field, but his primary positions are pitcher, middle infielder and centerfield.

Garrett Finkbeiner of Marquette has already played a year of basketball at Bay. In 2017, he posted a 1.49 earned run average and recorded 55 strikeouts in 51 2/3 innings of work for the Redmen.

Alex Hanson of Stephenson was the leadoff hitter and pitcher/shortstop for the Eagles this season and has shown ability to shut down some strong lineups. He has shown ability to be versatile on the field.

Sam McDonald of Traverse City West is a middle infielder for the Titans. He bats in the top of the order with a .341 average and holds a .491 on base percentage.

Kyler Moir of Hillman, Mich. is a left-handed pitcher and first-baseman for the Tigers. He currently holds a 1.63 ERA with 53 strikeouts through 30 innings. He’s also hitting .417 with six doubles and a grand slam home run and has committed just one error this season.

Alex Morehouse of Sault High was an All-SAC and All-District player for the Blue Devils last season and is continuing along that path this season. He normally plays at third base, but has also played at shortstop, second and pitched in the past.

Fynn Morrison of Victoria, Australia spent last summer playing for the Waverly Baseball Club and Forest Hill Baseball Club in Melbourne where he’s primarily a catcher. He also played shortstop and carried a combined .313 batting average.

Connor Olson of Washburn, Wis. was hitting .533 with eight RBIs and 11 stolen bases through 10 games for the Castleguards this season. He’s 4-0 on the mound with a 1.46 ERA and has fanned 28 and walked just three through 24 innings. Olson plays shortstop when he’s not pitching.

Alek Santure, a catcher from Superior Central, has shown ability to block the plate and receive the ball to go with an accurate arm. At the plate, he has often made contact and shown ability to get on base.

Avery TenEyck of Sault High has shown ability to play multiple positions. He’s primarily an outfielder, but has also spent time as a corner infielder and relief pitcher.

Dane VanDenHeuvel, a 2017 Norway graduate, is transferring from Northern Michigan University for the chance to play baseball. He was a catcher and pitcher for the Knights and known for his defense. With a strong arm, he was able to shut down opposing teams’ running games and strike out 44 batters and post a 0.75 ERA in 33 2/3 innings.

Mark Zhang of Canberra, Australia brings experience as a corner infielder and catcher. Since 2013, he has been part of the Canberra High Performance Program which required him to attend gym sessions and practice and/or play on a regular basis. He has competed in the U14, U16 and U18 National Youth Championships of Australia.
