Singles lift Braves past Maroons

GLADSTONE — Three wins in singles were enough to lift the Gladstone Braves to a 4-3 tennis victory over the Menominee Maroons Monday in their regular-season finale.

Gladstone’s Dan Pederson beat Cade Fernstrum (6-2, 6-0) in No. 2 singles. Ben Flaminio topped Noah Euevard (6-3, 6-0) at No. 3 and Erik Soderman dispatched Riley Richter (6-1, 6-2) in No. 4.

“This was another good day at singles for us,” said Braves’ coach Dan Williams. “Danny had a very nice match at two singles. His groundstrokes were working really well, and he was taking short balls well and coming to the net.

“Ben at three singles had a strong day. He was hitting his forehand really well which kept him in the points. His serving was good today and he was placing his strokes well.

“A nice match at four singles for Eric, too. What I like most about Eric’s match is he was playing real consistent today. He kept the ball in play very well and waited for the error from his opponent. He did a nice job today.”

Menominee won both contested doubles matches, including Jason Bower’s and Feline Zamora’s 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 victory over Peter Noblet and Jimmer Maki at No. 2. The Braves took No. 3 on a forfeit.

“Our doubles had some improvements, I feel,” said Williams. “Tyler (Barteld) and Ethan (Dawson) started out slow in the first set (in No. 1 doubles), but started to pick it up in the second set. They started hitting the ball harder and placing it better which made a big difference. They made a nice recovery in the second set after being down 5-2.

“Peter and Jimmer had a see-saw first set, up and down the whole time. They played really well together and made it to a tie-breaker in the first set. The tie-breaker didn’t go well for them and they lost that set, but I was still impressed with how they came together as a team. Definite improvements by our doubles teams today.”

Gladstone resumes in Thursday’s Mid-Peninsula Conference meet at Negaunee.
