NORWAY — Forest Park’s senior-driven Trojans and Norway’s young Knights captured Skyline Central Conference golf championships Monday at Oak Crest Golf Course.

Forest Park’s girls, with three seniors in the lineup, posted a 474 score to 479 for the host Knights.

In the boys meet, three freshmen helped Norway register a 336 to Forest Park’s 374.

Forest Park senior Avery Sommers shot a 106 for runner-up medalist. Seniors Alina Soha, 116, and Carolynn Bloomburg, 127, also figured in the scoring with junior Laina Toivonen, 125. Sophomore Mindy McKinnon filled out the lineup

“We did have high expectations,” Forest Park Coach Harold Payne said. “They played well on a tough course. “Avery’s scores have kept coming down. She was a bright spot.”

Oak Crest’s sand traps and pin placements left over from the weekend’s Paul Lambert Memorial men’s tournament posed some problems.

“They have not seen this much sand before nor have they played this course before, so it was all pretty foreign to them,” Payne said. “But they played well. They had some tough holes but they recovered and stayed focused.”

Norway’s Danae Anderson shot a 102 for medalist. Munising’s Taylor Downs was third at 110.

“Danae shot real well,” said first-year Norway Coach Joby Sullivan, who offered a little pep talk after hitting out of bounds on the first hole. “I told her to just keep having fun, play consistent and she did.”

The Knights also tallied Katie Leiker 113, Mikayla Faull 126 and Camie Clark 138.

Munising’s girls, 494, followed Forest Park and Norway. Big Bay de Noc, 502, placed fifth, followed by North Central, 524, and Mid Peninsula, 527.

Norway junior Trevor Anderson, Danae’s cousin, paced the boys tournament with a season-best eight-over 80.

“Overall, I hit my driver pretty well and I putted pretty well,” said Anderson, who experienced mixed results with his short game. “Every other hole it was all right, then it was bad.”

His only birdie was on the par-5, 440-yard sixth hole.

“I hit my drive to 30 out, got on and two-putted for birdie,” Anderson said.

Runner-up medalist Jeffrey VanHolla, one of the Knights’ three freshmen, carded an 81. Evan Anderson and Logan Parolini, the other frosh, shot 87 and 88, respectively. Senior Micah Wilson was the fifth member of the team.

“Trevor is Mr. Consistent for us, and he’s been doing that all year,” Sullivan said. “It’s nice to see the freshmen come in with low scores.

“It’s a fun group and they play with enthusiasm.”

Parolini’s 88 was a season-low.

“Logan’s out there every day trying to do something to get better,” Sullivan said.

VanHolla carded a 37 on the front nine and Trevor Anderson had a 38.

“I think everyone struggled on the back and the teams put it together on the front nine,” Sullivan said.

Munising’s Anthony Mattson finished third at 82.

Munising’s boys, 382, placed third, followed by Stephenson, 402; North Central, 406; Bark River-Harris, 409; Carney-Nadeau, 411; and Big Bay de Noc, 458.
