WCHA Championship to be televised Saturday

MARQUETTE — Fox-U.P., Channel 11 on Charter Communications cable TV systems, will air the WCHA Championship game live at 7 p.m. Saturday with Northern Michigan University hosting Michigan Tech at the Berry Events Center.

The league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament will be on the line, as will the debut of the Jeff Sauer WCHA Championship Trophy that goes to the playoff champion.

It will be the first time these two teams have played for a championship in the Upper Peninsula, according to a Monday news release from the WCHA.

Mark Evans and Dave Ellis will announce the game as they did during the teams’ four regular-season encounters that were also televised. This telecast opens with a pregame show at 6 p.m.

The game will also be available online for a fee on WCHA-TV at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/wcha/.

“The demand for tickets was extraordinary,” Northern Michigan University Director of Athletics Forrest Karr said. “There are so many talented hard-working student-athletes representing both institutions and we greatly appreciate Commissioner (Bill) Robertson’s willingness to allow fans from throughout the U.P. to watch and cheer on their efforts.”

“An all-Upper Peninsula WCHA Championship is truly a special event for Northern Michigan University, Michigan Tech University, the WCHA and college hockey,” said Robertson, who is also the WCHA president along with being men’s league commissioner. “We are thrilled to partner with TV6 and Fox-U.P. in providing a championship-caliber production of this game to hockey fans throughout the U.P. and globally via WCHA.tv.”
