Trio earns top 8 at state wrestling finals

DETROIT — Three area wrestlers reached the podium Saturday by placing among the top eight in their respective weight classes in the individual state finals.

Gladstone junior Adam Bruce took third at 130 pounds. Escanaba sophomore Hunter Larson (135) finished sixth and Gladstone senior Jared Demeuse (215) was seventh.

Bruce took a 6-0 decision from Essexville-Garber’s Mitch Christensen in a Division 3 third-place match.

Larson fell to Trenton’s Jacob Lanzini 16-3 in a D-2 fifth-place bout and Demeuse pinned Schoolcraft’s Devin Obryant in four minutes, two seconds for seventh place.

Bruce finished 46-1 this season with his lone blemish coming in 2-1 loss to Dundee’s Christian Killion Friday night. He bounced back with a 6-0 victory over Comstock Park’s Zion Taylor Saturday morning prior to his third-place bout.

Three other U.P. grapplers had podium finishes with Newberry’s Alex Henry (160) and Westwood’s Nathan Brewer (112) taking seventh in D-4 and Marquette’s Joe Lagrou (103) eighth in D-2.
