Mustangs too much for Cougars

Boys district

MUNISING — The Superior Central boys struggled with their shooting Monday night, dropping a 71-48 basketball decision to fifth-ranked Munising in a Class D district basketball opener.

Munising led 17-10 after the first quarter and 33-22 at halftime.

“Offensively, we couldn’t get going,” said Cougars’ coach Branson Richard. “It was pretty much an off night for everybody. We came out a little flat, but I’m still proud of the boys. We’re losing seven guys and we hate to see them go. We appreciate all the hard work our seniors did and wish them well in the future. We have four coming back and we’ll work our tails off in the off-season. Overall, we had a good season.”

The Mustangs (18-3) host third-ranked Rapid River (17-3) Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The Cougars finished 10-11.

Cade Contreras and Alec Blank paced the Mustangs with 17 points each. Joe Heinonen had 17 for the Cougars.

“They (Munising) really pushed the ball up the floor and did a good job working it in,” said Richard. “They were getting a lot of second shots.

“They were real good on the defensive boards, too. They really hustled to the loose balls.”
