Bulldogs top Emeralds

INDIAN RIVER — The Manistique girls’ basketball team battled host Inland Lakes right to the end before falling 44-43 Wednesday night in a Class C district game.
The Bulldogs trailed 19-9 after one quarter, 28-19 at halftime and 36-32 after three quarters before taking the lead in the final minute and hanging on. Trailing 44-43, Manistique’s Madison Kraatz missed a late 3-pointer and the Bulldogs ran out the final 10 seconds.
“It wasn’t the way we wanted to go out,” Manistique coach Dave Winkel said. “We were in control basically for three and a half quarters and let it slip away. It was a tough pill to swallow.
“We played very well. It was just a matter of our shots didn’t drop down the stretch and they made some key baskets in the fourth quarter. We got cold and they got hot.”
Manistique made 1-of-12 shots in the fourth quarter and the Bulldogs hit 6-of-11.
Kraatz led a balanced attack with nine points, with Madison Berry, Renae Schuetter and Emilee McDaniel each scoring eight points for the Emeralds, who had a 34-24 rebounding advantage and shot 28 percent with 18 turnovers. McDaniel also grabbed 14 rebounds.
Mara Clancy scored 18 points and Lexi Brendly hit 10 for Indian Lakes, which shot 42 percent with 13 turnovers.
Inland Lakes travels to St. Ignace tonight for the district championship game, while Manistique ends its season at 1-20.
