Gwinn downs Mid Pen
GWINN — Mid Peninsula boys’ basketball coach Mark Branstrom will trash the first-half game tape against Gwinn Wednesday night and save the second half tape.
The Wolverines sputtered in the first half and fell to Gwinn 66-51. Tucker Taylor scored 18 points and Austin Forbes followed with 17 points for the Modeltowners, who hit eight 3-pointers in the first half en route to a 22-6 first-quarter advantage and 40-16 lead at intermission.
“They were hotter than a pistol in the first half,” Branstrom said. “We were stuck in the mud in the first half. It was unbelievable. We were a whole different ball club in the second half, but it was a little too late.”
Mid Pen (2-10), which made 15-of-52 shots from the field for 29 percent, outscored Gwinn 35-26 in the second half.
Gwinn, which had a 33-26 rebounding edge, made 27-of-68 shots from the field including 10 3-pointers. Reid Hill added 10 points for the Modeltowners.
Terry Brower led Mid Pen with 19 points and Zach Englund made three 3-pointers en route to 18 points.
“Terry and Zach had good games for us,” Branstrom said.
“Everybody had a terrible first half. All seven guys turned it on in the second half. I was extremely happy with the second half.”
Gwinn won the JV game 65-35.
Mid Pen hosts Munising Friday and Gwinn travels to Westwood Tuesday.
