Eskymos get spot in state meet

ROCKFORD — The Escanaba cheer team finished fourth in the Division 3 regional Saturday at Rockford High School and will challenge for top honors in this weekend’s state meet.

Esky placed fourth in the regional with a total score of 742.28, while Gladstone was 11th with a total score of 661.68.

Charlotte (753.02) captured the regional, followed by Lake Odessa Lakewood (751.08), Comstock Park (747.12) and Escanaba. The top four teams advance to the state meet.

It was a tight regional and the Eskymos had to finish strong in Round 3.

They responded with a 313.00 score after hitting 217.40 in Round 1 and 211.88 in Round 2.

“My kids are most deserving,” Esky coach Kris Langlois noted. “To be honest, I was nervous before Round 3.”

Gladstone’s scores by round were 211.80, 181.28 and 284.60.

Escanaba is one of eight Division 3 teams vying for the state title Saturday at the Delta Plex in Grand Rapids. Division 3 competition is set for Saturday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The other four finalists are Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, Richmond, Monroe Jefferson and Flat Rock.

“I have no idea,” Langlois noted about how he thinks his team will fare at the state meet. “We are judged. As long as they do their best, and give it their all, I’m fine with any placement.

“We are now in the fight for the top eight in the state (in Division 3) and that’s pretty phenomenal.”

In Division 4 regional competition Saturday at Caledonia, Munising finished sixth and Iron Mountain was seventh.
