Esky falls to Hudsonville

Prep hockey

CHELSEA — Playing catch-up didn’t work out for the Escanaba Eskymos Saturday as they dropped a 3-2 hockey decision to Hudsonville on the final day of the Michigan Public School Showcase.

Esky trailed 2-0 early in the contest, but sliced its deficit in half on a goal by Christer Carne late in the opening period.

“To score one late in the first period showed we were back in it, but a couple penalites hurt us and they scored two power play goals,” said Esky coach Matt Hughes. “Our effort was great. Only, we had a few breakdowns defensively and mentally with penalties. They took advantage of two power plays and we only took advantage of one.

Hudsonville scored on a power play in the second stanza and held the two-goal lead until the final seven seconds when Grant Wickham brought the Eskymos within one.

“The whole third period, we worked hard,” said Hughes. “We created some good scoring chances, but were unable to capitalize on those. We couldn’t figure out their goaltender.”

Trevor Denome served as Esky’s goalie in Saturday’s contest. Brodie Goddard was in net Thursday and Friday.

The Eskymos (5-14) travel to Mountain View Ice Arena in Iron Mountaineer where they’ll face the Kingsford Flivvers Tuesday.
