GLADSTONE — If the Gladstone High School gym was dark after the girls varsity basketball was finished there Tuesday night, just blame visiting Westwood.

That’s because the Patriots shot the lights out in a 61-48 Mid-Peninsula Conference victory over the host Braves.

Westwood (6-2, 3-1 M-PC) made 51 percent from the field — 18 of 35 — and just missed 80 percent from the free-throw line, making 19 of 24 for 79 percent.

“Any time you shoot over 50 percent plus how well we shout our free throws, you should be happy,” Pats’ head coach Kurt Corcoran said. “Our goal is to shoot 80 percent from the line. It’s tough to do, so I’m pretty happy with how we did.”

Westwood built a 29-20 halftime lead and kept the lead around eight to 12 points throughout the second half.

Patriots sophomore Madi Koski led all scorers with 20 points, while senior teammate Elizabeth Farley and sophomore Tessa Leece added 12 apiece. And senior Marissa Carello also broke into double figures with 120 points.

“It seemed like every time we needed a big shot, Liz put the ball in the hole,” Corcoran said. “She hit a 3 and a couple of long-range jump shots at some real opportune times when Gladstone would start to make a little run.”

Westwood also held a 42-30 lead after three quarters.

Freshman Megan Crow paced the Braves with 12 points, while Andie Balenger and Kaitlyn Hardwick added 10 points each.

“Megan Crow is a 6-foot-3 freshman,” Corcoran said. “She did a lot of damage early. She had 10 (points) in the first half and she has some good post moves and a soft touch with the ball.

“We made a few defensive switches at halftime and she only had two free throws after that. We had to try to deny her the ball.”

Gladstone won the JV game 36-25.

Westwood has an unusual varsity doubleheader on Thursday night, hosting Calumet in a girls game at 6 p.m. and a Iron Mountain in a boys game at 7:30 p.m.

The JV games will take place at Aspen Ridge Middle School 90 minutes before each of those games.
