Gladstone, North Central cagers cruise to victories

Girls basketball roundup

MANISTIQUE — The Gladstone girls used a variety of defenses Thursday night to post a 56-31 basketball triumph over the Manistique Emeralds.

Gladstone led 13-5 after the first quarter and 34-14 at halftime of the Mid-Peninsula Conference outing.

“It was an all-around effort one through 10,” said Braves’ coach Andy Cretens. “We applied some pressure early and got some easy steals. We threw a lot of different things at them. The girls did a nice job with the new concepts we’ve been working on.”

Taelor Ziese led the Braves (7-5 overall, 3-4 M-PC) with 14 points. Kaitlyn Hardwick score 12 and Megan Crow had 10.

“She (Crow) is definitely on the top of your list when you set up your game plan,” said Emeralds’ coach Dave Winkel. “She presents match-up problems on both ends of the floor.”

The Braves, averaging 55 percent from the free throw line this season, was 12-of-14 this time. They had 15 turnovers.

Gladstone’s Taylor Hunter continues to nurse a knee injury and is expected to be sidelined for the next two weeks.

Joslyn Muth scored 10 points for the Emeralds (0-12 overall, 0-6 league), who committed 21 turnovers.

“This is the type of thing we expect from Joslyn,” said Winkel. “She did some things well. We pretty much rely on her every night.

“In the first half, we were out of sync. We struggled offensively. Our execution was pretty bad and bad offense led to bad defense. We had a hard time getting it together. This has been a problem all year. When it goes south, we usually have a hard time turning it around. Although, we came to life a little in the second half.”

The Braves held a 33-17 rebounding advantage and hit 21-of-46 field goals. Manistique was 12-of-38 from the field.

Gladstone, which also won the jayvee contest 49-43, travels to second-ranked Negaunee Tuesday. The Emeralds host Gwinn Monday.

ST. NICHOLAS — The Mid Peninsula girls came out on the short end against a tall Gwinn team.

“Overall, they have a lot of length and cover a lot of space,” said Mid Pen coach Bob Reichel. “They make it difficult to make entry passes. It’s hard to match up with them. Coach Ben Olsen does a good job with them. I never question our effort. Although, our decision making could have been better.”

Mid Pen, which fell to 5-6 with the non-conference loss, hosts Engadine Monday. The Modeltowers (6-6) visit Manistique Monday.
