Esky hosting gymnastics invitational

ESCANABA — The Escanaba gymnastics team will host its own invitational Saturday at the Escanaba High School gymnasium.

Along with Esky the meet will include Negaunee, Marquette, Superior 7 and Washburn, Wis. Superior 7 has gymnasists from Baraga, Calumet, Chassell, Hancock, Houghton, Jeffers and Lake Linden.

The Eskymos will be back in action after a year off. They were supposed to compete at the Marquette Invite but it was cancelled so Esky coach Lyndsey Rogers doesn’t know what to expect.

“Since our first meet in Marquette was cancelled the top team is anyone’s guess,” said Rogers. “We have never competed with Superior 7 or Washburn so we are excited to see how well they compete.”

Esky is short in numbers with only seven girls so it may not be competitive right away but Rogers thinks her team can find success in a different way.

“Our team is small this year so unfortunately we may not be able to compete when it comes to team scoring,” said Rogers. “But I anticipate my girls will do well with their individual scores.”

The Eskymos are ready to compete Saturday and are looking to do well at a few events.

“I believe my team will excel on floor and vault,” said Rogers.

“My co-coach Jayna (Ray) has a solid background in dance which is a great asset to have when putting together floor routines.”
