ST. NICHOLAS — Haley Trudell was on fire as she led a defensive-minded Mid Peninsula girls’ basketball team past Big Bay de Noc Friday night 49-22.

Trudell had a game high 23 points as she went into the game with a heavy heart.

“Haley Trudell played a phenomenal game and this morning she lost her grandpa,” said Mid Pen coach Bobby Reichel. “His motto was ‘give ’em hell’ and that’s our motto for the rest of the season.”

Trudell was extremely efficient from the field as she shot 10-for-17 (59 percent) and sank three 3-point shots.

“She’s a phenomenal shooter and she’s the best shooter I’ve ever seen,” said Reichel. “She was just confident tonight. Other team’s strategize around her and her shooting. She was just unbelievable.”

Big Bay coach Brad McPhee on the other hand was not too pleased on how his team came out to play.

“We had girls forgetting their jerseys and we didn’t even know how to line up on a free throw,” said McPhee. “I don’t know if it’s something in the water but their minds aren’t close to what they need to be right now.”

The Wolverines came out firing as they built an 8-0 lead. The Black Bears settled down and despite the poor start got back into the game and only trailed 9-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Mid Pen picked up its defense in the second quarter. It forced Big Bay to go 0-for-7 from the floor and took advantage as it grabbed rebounds and pushed it down the floor for fastbreak opportunities.

Big Bay’s only point came on a free throw from Brooke Dalgord mid-way through the period as the Wolverines took a commanding 20-7 lead into halftime.

“We focussed on defense quite a bit,” said Reichel. “They have Dalgord and (Holli) Stapleton and we want to shut them down. That’s our goal and we planned our defense on that and I couldn’t ask for better defense.”

The Wolverines came out of halftime and continued their dominance early as they increased the lead to 27-9.

The Black Bears became more aggressive after that outscoring Mid Pen by three for the rest of the quarter but still trailed 31-16 heading into the final quarter.

The Wolverines really poured it on in the fourth quarter behind stellar defense and lights out shooting as they went 8-for-13 (62 percent) from the floor.

The Black Bears again couldn’t get anything going in the fourth quarter as they shot 3-for-14 and allowed Mid Pen to score at will.

“I sort of sensed we were a little disorganized out there,” said McPhee. “We were getting some good looks but they just weren’t falling. Instead of settling down it spiraled out of control.”

Kennedy Englund was the second leading scorer for the Wolverines with 13 while Dalgord led the Black Bears with 12.

Mid Pen travels to Bark River-Harris Tuesday while Big Bay goes to North Dickinson the same day.
