Norse women get victory at SC4 tourney

PORT HURON, Mich. — Jordan Kraemer hit 28 points Saturday, leading the Bay College women to a 64-58 basketball victory over St. Clair County Community College.

The Norse (4-5) led by as much as 55-40 with seven minutes left in the contest, but two long 3-point shots by Chante Parker helped the Skippers climb within 61-58.

Paige Welch then sank a pair of free throws and Caitlin Hewitt added another gifter to preserve the victory.

Justice Kinnunen added 12 points and Welch had 11 for the Norse, who finished 13-of-23 from the line.

The victory enabled the Norse to bounce back after blowing an 18-point lead in Friday’s 66-62 loss to Mott Community College in the opening game of the St. Clair County Classic.

A six-game winning streak ended for the Bay College men as they fell to eighth-ranked Mott 80-61 Friday.

Marcus Cole tossed in 19 points for Mott, which captured four national titles since 2002. Henry Speight added 18 and Eddie Thigpen had 17.

Dre Tuominen, who drained 7-of-8 free throws, led the Norse with 20 points. Marcus McKenney tallied 13 and Rasonte Smith had 10 in a reserve role.

The Norse then fell to St. Clair 83-69 Saturday, dropping their record to 6-5.

Bay took a 16-11 lead on a hoop by Dontae Ellis, but trailed 41-30 following back-to-back triples by Derrick Johnson shortly before the half.

Bay trimmed its deficit to 46-40 on a hoop from inside by McKenney slightly more than 4 1/2, minutes into the second half and was still within 75-67 following a field goal and free throw by Tuominen late in the contest. The Norse, however, were outscored 8-2 during the remainder of the game.

Tuominen scored 20 points. Kobi Barnes-Rumsden added 19 and Tyler Willette had nine points and 12 rebounds.

Quintin Johnson hit 21 points for St. Clair, which improved to 6-1.

The Norse visit Alpena Community College Wednesday with the women playing at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:30.
