Linder leads Wolves to win against Mid Peninsula cagers

Girls basketball roundup

CARNEY — The Carney-Nadeau relied on its defense Friday night as it earned a 36-31 victory over Mid Peninsula.

“Defensively we played well,” said Carney coach Travis Depuydt. “They didn’t get a lot of good looks throughout the night. That’s why we won.”

Both teams struggled to score in the first quarter as the Wolves took an early 7-6 lead. They increased their lead in the second quarter eventually taking a 22-17 lead at halftime.

The second half was a defensive battle as both teams went point-for-point as Carney held on to its five point lead the whole second half.

“Last year we had some inexperience on varsity,” said Depuydt. “We have some end-of-game experience now. We are able to hold off opponents because of the experience.”

Taylor Linder took advantage of a mismatch down low to lead Carney with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

“That was definitely the best game of Taylor’s career,” said Depuydt.

“We knew we had an advantage going into the game size wise so we wanted to make it a point to get the ball into the post.”

Sara Sivula added 11 points for the Wolves.

Kennedy Englund led Mid Pen with 12 points and Haley Trudell added 10.

Carney travels to Forest Park Tuesday while Mid Pen heads to North Central.
