Hannahville splits games with Lakers

Prep basketball

HANNAHVILLE — The Hannahville girls withstood a late rally by Mackinac Island Saturday as they pulled out a 34-32 basketball victory over the Lakers.

Senior Dayson Beaver drained a 15-foot set shot from the left baseline with 10 seconds left to play as the Soaring Eagles then hung on for the win.

Hannahville (2-0) took a 28-13 lead on a steal and layup by senior Cecilia Beaver midway through the third quarter.

The Lakers (0-4), with just five available players, then began to whittle away at their deficit and tied the score at 32 on a free throw by Brooke Dziobak with 1:26 remaining in the contest.

“At halftime, we told the girls everybody who could play was going to play,” said Hannahville coach Seth Miller. “We went with a two-minute rotation and everybody was going to play regardless of score. We told them ‘you have to fight.’ I’m glad they executed that last inbound play. That was a nice shot.”

Dayson Beaver scored 11 points and twin sister Cecilia finished with nine. Ella Cowell led the Lakers with 14.

“They (Lakers) kept fighting,” said Miller. “There was no quit in them. They’re going to be a different team when we go over there (Feb. 9-10). The next time we see them, they’ll have four more players.”

Hannahville committed 20 turnovers and Mackinac had 23.

In the boys’ game, a late run by Mackinac resulted in a 43-32 triumph over the Soaring Eagles.

The Soaring Eagles (0-2) trailed by as many as eight points in the second stanza, but climbed within 31-29 on a 20-foot jumper by Jacob Ortiz 80 seconds into the fourth.

The Lakers answered with 9-0 run, taking an insurmountable 41-30 advantage on a fast break layup by senior Nick Davis three minutes later.

“In the first half, I was happy with our execution,” said Hannahville coach Mark Gauthier. “Only, we had too many turnovers and they turned about six or seven of those into layups. I thought Dom (Metzger) played pretty good on Davis overall. Dom kept him in check except for the fast breaks. When we executed, we got open shots. That got away from us down the stretch, although we have to credit Mackinac for that.”

Davis finished with 24 points and Aaron Riggs added 10 for the Lakers, who hit just 3-of-14 free throws and committed 12 turnovers.

Freshman Joe Larson hit 12 points for Hannahville, which had 20 miscues.

Both Hannahville teams host Beaver Island for a pair of games this weekend.
