Free throws lift Rapid River
Rockets finish strong against North Central
RAPID RIVER — The Rapid River girls basketball team held off North Central with a big fourth quarter to close out the 45-38 victory against the Jets.
“There’s always things to work on but overall it was a good effort,” said Rapid River coach Mitch Hall. “Our defense played real well.”
The Jets scored the first basket of the game but the Rockets scored the next seven and eventually took a 10-4 lead into the second quarter.
North Central fought hard in the second quarter and came within two points multiple time but the Rockets kept control and took a 20-15 lead heading into halftime.
The Jets hung around in the third quarter and cut the deficit to 26-25 and put itself in a good position heading into the final quarter.
The Rockets held their composure in the fourth quarter and found some clutch shooting from multiple players especially at the free throw line to outscore the Jets in the fourth quarter by six and close out the victory.
“I told them at halftime it would be great to make a little third quarter run,” said Hall.
“It came down to the wire and what won it for us was the free throws. Emily Thibault came off the bench and went 4-for-4 at the line. Those little things made a difference for us at the end.”
Rapid River made 13-of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter.
Elizabeth Goodacre led the Rockets with 13 points and nine rebounds while Rachel Bintner added 11 points and eight rebounds.
“I thought it was a pretty balanced night for us,” said Hall.
“The girls hit shots at the right times and we were able to pull out the victory.”
Jadie Linder and Chloe Wells each had 11 points to lead the Jets.
Rapid River hosts Superior Central Friday while North Central welcomes Mid Peninsula Tuesday.
