Esky’s Howes gets regional award

ESCANABA — Dave Howes led the Escanaba football team on its best state playoff run since 1981. For his efforts, Howes has been selected a regional Coach of the Year by the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association.

Escanaba finished its season with a 10-3 record. The Eskymos finished second in the Great Northern Conference race and got hot at season’s end en route to Division 4 district and regional championships after three straight games at the Escanaba Athletic Field.

Esky’s stellar season came to a close with loss in the state semifinals to Grand Rapids Catholic Central, which captured its second straight state championship.

“It’s a total team effort,” said Howes, who also was named Eleven-Player Coach of the Year by WJMN Local 3. You have to have the players, of course, and the coaches to follow what we are trying to do. My assistant coaches help out tremendously.”

Howes has compiled a 24-11 record in his three seasons as varsity coach.
