Wolves win Skyline title, top Maroons

MENOMINEE — The Carney-Nadeau Wolves took care of business Thursday night as they posted a 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-13) non-conference volleyball victory over the Menominee Maroons.

Sara Sivula led the Wolves at the net with nine kills, Sarah Jackson added six and Breanne Bedgood and Desirea Belec had five apiece.

Layla Blahnik-Thoune collected 16 assists and Talisha McCullough had 14.

Alanis Harris led the Wolves with 14 digs. Bedgood had 11.

“We’ve been pretty solid on serving and defense,” said Carney coach Steve Kedsch. “We’ve challenged the girls to get a little stronger on offense. We’ve been able to do some of the things we practiced and we’re getting a good balance on offense, which is a good sign going into districts.”

While Carney was playing outside of the league, Munising was dropping a 3-2 decision at Superior Central, enabling the Wolves to clinch their first Skyline Central Conference title.

This marked the first league championship since 2007 for Carney when it captured the Central U.P. Conference crown.

Carney, which won the jayvee match in two sets, hosts Hannahville in a Class D district opener Monday at 7 p.m. (EDT).

Stephenson 3, Mid Peninsula 1

ST. NICHOLAS — The excitement of Parents’ Night wasn’t quite enough for the Mid Peninsula Wolverines as they dropped a 3-1 (20-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-17) decision to the Stephenson Eagles.

“In the first set, we had our momentum,” said Mid Pen coach Emily Kayser. “Our energy level was real high and everything was going our way. Serve receives hurt us after that and our communication broke down. Once they got the momentum, they rode with it.”

Mid Pen’s Haley Trudell collected eight kills and a block. Kennedy Englund also had eight kills.

Englund was Mid Pen’s defensive leader with 28 digs. Trudell added 22 and Elli Paulson recorded 20. Kamryn Croasdell tallied 16 and Morgan Rajala had 15.

“Haley had a real nice match at the net,” said Kayser. “We had a lot of nice volleys tonight.”

The Wolverines, who dropped the jayvee match in two sets, open Class D district play at Rapid River Wednesday against the winner of Monday’s Munising/Superior Central match.

Manistique 3, Big Bay de Noc 0

GARDEN CORNERS — The Big Bay de Noc volleyball team started fast Thursday night, but Manistique finished strong as the Emeralds blanked the Black Bears 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-15).

“We came out of that first set ready to win,” Big Bay coach Angie Paulson said. “We were moving our feet, playing great defense, communicating and were playing some quality volleyball. Even when we made mistakes we shook them off and kept going.”

Manistique, however controlled play to capture the second and third sets by a comfortable margin.

“I’m not sure what happened in that second and third set,” Paulson said. “We were right in the game and then both times we couldn’t shake off the mistakes.”

Leading Big Bay were Brooke Dalgord with six kills, Meagan Yonker with 10 digs, Rylie Lawrence with five assists and Maddie McPhee with 15 digs.

Manistique won the JV match 3-0 (25-1, 25-12, 15-7).

Big Bay will face host Rapid River Wednesday in the Class D district tournament, while Manistique hosts Newberry in a Class C opener Monday at 6 p.m.

“The good news is we are peaking at the right time and we have some great potential to tap into come districts next week,” Paulson said.
