Wolves sweep North Central

Prep volleyball

CARNEY — The Carney-Nadeau Wolves avoided a letdown in the third set Thursday night as they posted a 3-0 (25-7, 25-10, 26-24) volleyball triumph over the North Central Jets.

“We kind of relaxed a little,” said Carney coach Steve Kedsch. “We made a few unforced errors and it seemed to give them some confidence. We were chasing them much of the third set. Defensively, we woke up and started playing better in the end. We were hitting the ball well.”

Breanne Bedgood hit eight service aces for the Wolves. Sara Sivula added four aces and nine kills. Sarah Jackson recorded eight kills and 11 digs. Carolina Conca, an exchange student from Italy, filled in for Layla Blahnik-Thoune and collected 11 assists. Talisha McCullough had 10 assists and 11 digs.

“Carolina did a good job setting up our hitters,” Kedsch said, noting Blahnik-Thoune was out with an ankle injury.

Coach Lynn Britton was pleased with the way the Jets responded in the third set.

“The third set is always our best one,” she said. “It seems like it takes a couple sets for us to get goiing. We received serves better than we did in the first two sets. I think we adjusted well. Once they got flustered, we really took advantage of it. We were up by five points at one time.

Natalie Dombrowski led the Jets with five kills, one block and nine digs. Samantha DePatie recorded five kills and seven digs. Macy Whitens finished with 13 digs.

Carney, which also won the jayvee match (25-9, 25-8), hosts Norway Tuesday. The Jets host Bark River-Harris Monday.

“Andie Arsanault hustled to save balls,” said Britton. “She made things happen for us in the jayvee match.”

The summary:

Carney-Nadeau — Bedgood (eight aces, four kills, four digs); Sivula (four aces, nine kills, four digs); Jackson (two kills, eight kills, 11 digs); Harris (two aces, seven digs); McCullough (four kills, 10 assists, 11 digs); Belec (two kills, four digs); Conca (11 assists, two digs).

Iron Mountain 3, Manistique 1

MANISTIQUE — A fast start didn’t carry over through the entire match for the Manistique Emeralds as they dropped a 3-1 (12-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-19) volleyball decision to the Iron Mountain Mountaineers.

“We came out real hot,” said Emeralds’ coach Amy Nixon. “We communicated and moved real well. Going into the second set, we came out a little flat and Iron Mountain picked up its offense. I think the girls were real proud of themselves Tuesday night (following a 3-2 victory over Gwinn).

“We came in with hopes of beating Iron Mountain. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out that way. The consistency needs to be there throughout the match. We just couldn’t keep the momentum going after the first set.”

Manistique’s Emily McDaniel hit three service aces to go with 10 kills. Lenna Smith added six kills. Joslyn Muth collected 22 assists and Sydny Peterson had 21 digs.

The Emeralds, who also dropped the jayvee match (27-29, 26-24, 25-20), host Newberry Monday.

Munising 3, Superior Central 0

EBEN — A slow start hurt Superior Central’s chances in a 3-0 loss (25-11, 25-19, 25-19) to the Munising Mustangs.

“We played quite a bit better after the first set,” said Cougars’ coach Kris Bray. “We were real tense in the first set and fell behind 10-0. Our defense tightened up and we were able to get a little bit of our offense going in the second and third sets.

“Their hitting was so good that it took us out of our offense. They absolutely came out on fire. They’re a good team. Our offense never really got going the way it’s capable.”

Emma Rondeau led the Cougars with 10 service points, including an ace, and four kills. Taylor Silta had 11 assists and Jaelynn Klyk recorded nine digs.

The Cougars, who also dropped the jayvee match (19-25, 25-15, 15-12), host Mid Peninsula Monday. Munising hosts Rapid River Tuesday.

Superior Central — Rondeau (10 points, one ace, four kills, three digs); Silta (four points, once ace, 11 assists, three digs); Klyk (four points, one ace, nine digs); Lancour (three points, three kills, one block); Emard (two points, one ace, three kills, two blocks, one dig).

Bark-River Harris 3, Big Bay de Noc 0

GARDEN CORNERS — The Bark River-Harris volleyball team routed host Big Bay de Noc 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-8) Thursday night.

The Broncos started fast and never let up on a night without their head coach. Brooke Jorasz was not on the bench due to a family emergency, so the team was under the direction of her assistants Ashlee Anderson and Mick Reynolds.

Cherdian Peterson served 18 points, Jaelin Lockwood delivered six kills and Makena Lockwood collected three blocks to pace BR-H.

“They came together as a team and had fun,” Anderson said. “The win is just a bonus.”

The Black Bears were plagued by poor communication on the court.

“Our communication did us in tonight,” Big Bay coach Angie Paulson said. “We weren’t talking, we weren’t moving our feet. We beat ourselves and it’s hard to play a solid game when you aren’t communicating and you’re waiting for the ball instead of anticipating where it will go.”

Leading Big Bay were Rylie Lawrence (3 digs, 2 assists), Holli Stapleton (3 kills, 4 digs, 1 assist, 1 block), Maddie McPhee (2 kills, 5 digs), Brooke Dalgord (5 kills, 5 blocks), Meagan Yonker (1 kill, 2 digs, 3 assists) and Kaitlin Halvorson (1 dig, 2 assists).

BR-H won the jayvee match 2-0 (25-3, 25-7).

North Dickinson 3, Mid Peninsula 0

ST. NICHOLAS — North Dickinson served up 15 aces and defeated Mid Peninsula 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-18) in Skyline Central Conference volleyball Thursday.

Sami Borvan, Juliann Wickman and Kylie Gustafson each served five aces. Gustafson had 18 serving points with a 23-for-24 mark and Borvan was 14-for-15 with 12 points.

Briana Smith (10 for 10) and Skye Ledzian each served 100 percent, leading the Nordics to a 93 percent team serving mark.

“Our serving was very good,” said Nordics coach Sandy Haustein.

Borvan led the Nordics with 16 kills. Segerdahl, 12-for-12 in attacks, tallied eight kills and two block kills.

“Lily had a real good game at the net,” Haustein said.

Gustafson added eight kills. Wickman had 27 assists.
