Gladstone boys, Bruce capture Invite honors

Cross country

MANISTIQUE — It was a fun outing for Adam Bruce Wednesday as he dominated the boys’ cross country race in the Manistique Invitational.

The Gladstone junior covered the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 33 seconds. He was followed by classmate Jake Strasler (19:19), Munising’s Darren Castello (19:38) and Gwinn’s Jacob Doruesky (19:47)

“I’m happy with my time,” said Bruce. “I think the sand was harder than running hills. I started running in the grass a little. It was a good race. I like how the people were on the course cheering us on. It was fun.”

The Gladstone boys captured the title with 48 points, followed by Munising 57 and Engadine 73.

Manistique sophomore Alex Misniakewicz placed fifth (19:57) and senior teammate Phillip Hagneson took seventh (20:50) on this sunny and warm day at Intake Park.

“I thought our boys did real well,” said Manistique coach Laurie Lindstrom.

“Alex and Phillip (Hagenson) had solid races. Shelby (Misniakiewicz) ran well, too. She sometimes carries the weight of the girls’ team by herself.”

The Munising girls won with 31 points, followed by Gladstone 61 and Mid Peninsula 67.

Munising junior Madeleine Peramaki took the girls’ title at 21:08, three seconds ahead of senior teammate Alyssa Webber.

“It was rough out there,” said Peramaki. “There was a lot of sand on the course, but everybody had to run through it and I just tried to push through. It was a lot warmer than I expected. Although, I don’t think the weather was much of a factor.”

Mid Pen freshman Daisy Englund took third (23:46). Superior Central sophomore Danika Walters took fourth (24:46).

“I felt it went real good,” said Englund. “The sand was in the warmest part of the course. It was quite challenging. I tried near the grass. It felt good to get our first meet in. I don’t think I’ll be as nervous for next week (the Superior Central Invitational on Wednesday).”

The Superior Central girls arrived late for the varsity race due to a lock-down at their school, but meet officials allowed them to run in the jayvee race and count their times toward the varsity standings.

“The course was really challenging, but I always like challenges,” said Walters. “We knew it could be hot at this race. I ran in New Hampshire this summer. It was hot over there, and I did a 5-K in the heat while I was there. Through my training, I knew what I had to work on.”

Senior Jolan Steinecke was Gladstone’s pacesetter in fifth (25:50).

“In the first part of the race I felt real good, but I stayed back a little,” said Steinecke. “The heat bothered me for a little while in the first lap, but the second was my stronger lap. I knew what was coming and felt real strong coming in, but it was challenging. This wasn’t a PR course.”

Superior Central’s Betty Jo Swajanen took seventh (26:10), a second ahead of teammate Sophie Maki.
