Gladstone downs Niagara

Legion baseball

NIAGARA, Wis. — Gladstone pitcher Owen Hanson settled down after yielding a first-inning home run and the Indians defeated Niagara 6-1 in American Legion baseball Tuesday at Memorial Park.

Gladstone plated a run in the top half of the inning and Niagara answered in the bottom half with lefty-swinging Joe Murvich lining a home run down the right field line.

After a scoreless second inning, Gladstone tallied two runs in the third inning and three in the fifth. Rain stopped the game after five innings.

Hanson allowed four hits over five innings, two by Murvich and a double from Hunter Kaldor. Micah Wilson had the other.

“We were very lax out there,” summed up Niagara Coach Dale Blagec.

Gladstone scored two of its three fifth-inning runs on a bunt from Elliot Danhoff.

“You ever see that before?” Blagec said. “I haven’t until tonight.”

Niagara had another misplay when a runner was thrown out at third base by 10 feet.

Braeden Lamberg and Luke Weinert each had two Gladstone hits. Ben Schwalbach and Danhoff doubled in the two-run third.

Niagara’s Wilson pitched to the fourth inning and Trey Doda finished up.

Niagara, playing .500 baseball this season according to Blagec, closes out the home schedule today with Crivitz. Gladstone hosts Niagara for games Saturday and Sunday.
