ESCANABA– The 70th Annual Michigan-Wisconsin Tennis Open is scheduled for Aug. 5-6 in Escanaba.

The cost is $18 for singles and $22 for doubles per team and includes a T-shirt. The entry deadline is July 28 for the tourney, which is a fund-raiser for Escanaba tennis.

There are 10 divisions spanning youth through adults set for singles and 12 divisions for doubles competition based upon age and skill level. Singles play on tournament weekend will take place on Saturday and doubles on Sunday.

Entry forms can be obtained at the Escanaba Civic Center or off the website www.escanaba.org and clicking on the adult recreation programs link.

Denny Lueneberg, tourney director, said the event does not attract as many participants, but it is still a nice showcase for tennis with participants coming from around the U.P. and Wisconsin.

“In the past we’ve had 100 entries,” Lueneberg said. “It’s not like the old days when we had over 200, but it’s still a good-sized tournament. We have a good group that comes down from Marquette.”

The tourney’s base will be Escanaba’s Ludington Park Courts, while facilities also will be used at Escanaba High School, Royce Park, Veteran’s Park and Gladstone’s Pfotenhauer Park.

“It’s been a popular tournament through the years,” Lueneberg added.
