Elite eight for Esky in Girls Major

Girls Little League

ST. CLAIR — Escanaba finished 3-0 in pool play and advanced to the elite eight at the Little League Major Girls State Tournament at Legacy Fields in St. Clair.

Esky routed White Lake 19-5 in four innings Saturday and defeated Milan 8-2 Sunday to win its pool and earn a matchup against host St. Clair today at 9:30 a.m. and possible 2 p.m. semifinal versus a team to be determined.

“Both Mckayla Mott and Aubrey Stropich did a good job controlling their games,” Esky head coach Todd Milkiewicz said about his two pitchers. “We’re very confident in our pitching staff. And our bats haven’t faltered at all. If we can jump on them and stay ahead (today), we have a tendency to sail through teams.”

In Saturday’s game, Stropich scattered three hits with six strikeouts and no walks. Carney Salo went 5-for-5, Abby Hill finished 4-for-4 and Isabelle Braun, Mott and Stropich each added three hits.

In Sunday’s game, Mott gave up three hits and struck out 12. Braun and Hill each had three hits and Mott and Salo each collected a pair of hits.

Milkiewicz said St. Clair is a solid team, which lost its lone pool game 11-10 to West Branch.

Two wins Monday would put Esky in the state championship game Tuesday.

Another highlight for Escanaba was attending the Detroit Tigers’ game against Toronto Saturday night at Comerica Park. The Tigers won 11-1.

“We are super excited to be here (at the state tourney),” Milkiewicz said. “It’s been a great experience for the kids. The Tigers game was a topper to our games down here. They all got hats. We got treated well by the Tigers’ organization.”
