Rockets extend streak to 13
BARK RIVER — The Rapid River Rockets extended their winning streak to 13 games Thursday as they swept to 6-4 and 17-8 softball victories over the Bark River-Harris Broncos.
Rapid River (15-3) needed eight innings to win the first game.
Jaden Schwartz got the Rockets going in the eighth with a two-out double. Brittany Schwartz sent the Rockets ahead for good with a single and Lexi Trombley’s single gave them their final two-run cushion.
Rapid River’s Rhiley Hubert had a no-hitter going through five innings before the Broncos scored four times to take their only lead (4-3) in the sixth.
“They had the one big inning,” said Rockets’ coach George Kanyuh. “It was their third time through the linue and they started to put the bat on the ball a little.”
The Rockets forced the extra frame by tying the score on Richelle Vandeville’s ground out in the seventh.
“I’m glad we tied it up,” said Kanyuh. “The two runs in the eighth put us in position to win it.”
Brittany Schwartz, who pitched the last two innings in relief, got the win.
Rapid River’s Shelby LaCosse had two hits, including a double. Trombley and Brittany and Jaden Schwartz also had two hits.
Erica Rubick collected four hits and drove in five runs for the Rockets in Game 2. Hubert and Vandeville had three apiece.
Brittany Schwartz clubbed a two-run homer and Gwen Naeyaert added a solo shot for her first varsity homer.
The Rockets are entered in Saturday’s Kingsford Invitational. BR-H visits Superior Central for a doubleheader Tuesday.
