Rapid River softball sweeps Menominee

RAPID RIVER — The Rapid River softball team ended its regular season at home on a high note as it swept Menominee 6-3 and 6-0 Friday.

“It was nice to see us firing on all cylinders,” said RR coach George Kanyuh. “Our pitching, fielding and hitting were all on point. We didn’t strand many runners on base. We’re just hoping it carries over into districts.”

Rapid River 6-6, Menominee 3-0

In the first game the Rockets led the whole way and held off a Menominee comeback attempt in the seventh inning to win 6-3.

The Rockets took an early 3-1 lead until they scored three runs in the sixth inning to give themselves a little bit of a cushion.

“It was our third time through the lineup seeing this pitcher,” said Kanyuh. “Hitters were getting comfortable at the plate against her.”

They would need it as Menominee scored two runs in the seventh inning but came up short.

Brittany Schwartz, Tina Olsen, and Shelby LaCosse each had two hits for the Rockets.

Schwartz pitched all seven innings for RR as she allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out 10 and walking one.

In Game 2 the Rockets were solid throughout shutting out Menominee 6-0.

RR was on fire at the plate as each player in the lineup had at least one hit and the Rockets scored in four of their six innings.

Erica Proehl, LaCosse, Lexie Trombley, and Jaden Schwartz each had two hits for RR.

Rhiley Hubert got the win as she pitched four innings for the Rockets allowing one hit and striking out four.

“Rhiley is a senior and we thought it would be nice to have her pitch in her last home game,” said Kanyuh. “She was really pumped. She was on top of her game for her last time on the mound at our ballpark.”

Brittany Schwartz came in for relief and pitched three innings allowing two hits while striking out three.

“Brittany came in fresh and relaxed,” said Kanyuh. “She picked up where she left off in Game 1.”
