Eskymos cruise to 7-1 tennis victory over Iron Mountain

IRON MOUNTAIN — Winning a pair of three-set matches proved helpful to the Escanaba Eskymos Thursday as they posted a 7-1 tennis victory over the Iron Mountain Mountaineers.

In No. 3 singles, Esky’s Nathan Pascoe outlasted David Brule 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 in a match that lasted two hours, 45 minutes.

“Nathan stayed consistent,” said Esky coach Tom Penegor. “He kept the ball deep. Nathan was a little tentative in the second set, but he became more aggressive in the third. This was a nice win for the team overall.”

In No. 1 doubles, Paul Carne and Nick Dufour rallied past Trent Juul and Carson Wonders 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.

“They were tentative in the first set,” said Penegor.

“They were playing not to lose, then started playing to win in the second set. We just told them to hit the ball like they do in practice and keep the ball deep. Our guys buckled down and made it through that match.”

Esky resumes Tuesday at Kingsford.
