Esky splits games with ranked foes
ANN ARBOR — The Escanaba softball team finished strong Saturday in the Ann Arbor Invitational by splitting a pair of games against Division 1 ranked opponents.
In the opener, seventh-ranked Howell earned a 6-1 win as the Eskymos stranded 10 baserunners, including loading the bases twice.
Gabi Salo pitched the first four innings and gave up two runs on two hits with eight strikeouts. Katie Ross pitched the last two innings and allowed four runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Lexi Chaillier led the offense going 3-for-3 and scoring the lone run for the Eskymos, who are ranked third in Division 2.
In Game 2 cut short in the fifth inning due to rain, Chaillier stayed hot and went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer, Emily Bruntjens went 2-for-3 and Ross delivered a three-run triple. Esky had runners on second and third with one out when the game was stopped against Utica Ford, which is ranked second in Division 1.
Salo pitched four innings, allowing four runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
