MANISTIQUE — Escanaba’s Collin Arnt was honored Saturday as an Eighth Grade Wrestler of the Year at the Manistique Youth Wrestling Meet.

Arnt shared the award with Nathan Hermans from Sault Ste. Marie and Bradley Hall from Rudyard. There was a three-way tie in voting by U.P. coaches of all clubs participating in the youth wrestling program.

Wrestlers are nominated using the following criteria: technical ability, career performance, record, grades in school, sportsmanship, community involvement and all-around character.

This year’s nominations were narrowed down to nine wrestlers from across the U.P. Almost all were state qualifiers to Lansing this year.

This award has been given out for more than 25 years and is comprised of votes from U.P. coaches of all clubs who participate in the youth wrestling program.

There previously never had been a three-way tie for first place.

Second and third place were only separated by one vote. Coaches discussed the results and decided the three wrestlers would share the award.

Each wrestler will have their name put on the traveling trophy and will get to possess it for four months before returning it to next year’s winner.

Last year’s winner, Hunter Larson of Escanaba, was on hand to present this year’s award to the winning trio.
