Braves split, Rockets lose to Norway

MARQUETTE — The Gladstone Braves started their weekend on the right foot Friday as they romped to a 13-1 softball victory over the Norway Knighs in five innings in the Marquette Spring Swing Invitational.

Maddie Kowalski and Lexi Winling combined for a two-hitter.

Taylor Hunter collected three hits, including a three-run homer. Sydney Herioux had two hits and three RBIs.

Tasi Martinez clubbed a two-run homer and Kaitlyn Hardwick added a solo shot.

“We had good pitching, hitting and defense,” said Braves’ manager John Nevala.

“We’re very pleased.”

Marquette 8, Gladstone 0

Chelsea Wiggins fired a no-hitter and struck out 10 as the Marquette Redettes then handed Gladstone a 10-0 loss.

“She had a real good riseball,” said Nevala. “We were chasing balls out of the strike zone. We just weren’t patient enough.”

The Redettes scored seven times off Jenna Steinhoff in the opening frame.

“We’re pleased with the way Jenna pitched after the first inning,” said Nevala.

“She gave up just one hit after that. We had a couple errors and little bit of miscommunication in the first inning, but we like the way the girls held in there.”

Norway 5, Rapid River 4

At late comeback fell a little short for the Rapid River Rockets as they dropped a 5-4 decision to Norway in a contest halted after five innings due to the 75-minute limit.

Rapid River’s Lexi Trombley started the fifth with a leadoff home run and Jaden Schwartz added a two-run triple. Erica Proehl finished with two hits.

“In the first four innings, we were dead,” said Rockets’ manager George Kanyuh.

“We made a couple mistakes in the field and didn’t hit the ball, then we finally strung a few hits together in the fifth.

The girls showed fight. That’s something to build on.”

Rhiley Hubert, who pitched four innings, took the loss. She struck out five, walked three and gave up four hits. Trombley worked the fifth, recording a strikeout and allowing no hits.

The Rockets face Marquette today at 4 and Gladstone at 7.
