Twins lead Black Bears past Eagles

GARDEN CORNERS — The Johnson brothers recorded double-doubles Thursday night, leading the Big Bay de Noc boys to a 73-40 basketball triumph over the Stephenson Eagles.

Eric Johnson collected 24 points and 16 rebounds and Tyler Johnson added 22 points and 10 boards in the non-conference outing. Robbie Ray hit 11 points for the Black Bears, who improved to 3-15 with their second straight victory.

“It has been a combination of a few things,” said Big Bay coach Bob Pederson after his team’s second win this week. “We’ve been taking care of the ball. Our defense has picked up and we’ve been rebounding like crazy. We also brought Alex LaLonde up from the jayvees which allows Eric to post up a little more. We really worked their zone well and got good shots. It was a good night for us to gain momentum.”

Ethan Brown led the Eagles (3-14) with 16 points.

Big Bay held a 54-30 rebounding advantage and committed nine turnovers. Stephenson had 12 miscues.

The Black Bears, who dropped the jayvee contest 48-46, visit Rapid River Tuesday. The Eagles host third-ranked Norway Tuesday.
