Munising’s fast start hurts Manistique

MANISTIQUE — Alec Blank broke away for some easy baskets in the first quarter to help Munising pull away for a 63-46 victory over Manistique here Saturday in a non-conference boys basketball game.

Blank finished with 16 points and Cade Contreras had 21 points to pace the Mustangs (16-3). Munising hit 22-of-43 field goals and held a 33-31 rebound edge.

“Blank went off and got some easy baskets and they just out-hustled us,” said Manistique coach Ed Marietti. “We didn’t get back on defense very well. A lot of their buckets were just layups.”

Marietti said the Emeralds (1-18) also had issues with turnovers. “Every time we got a turnover we turned it back over to them,” he said. “A lot of them were unforced (turnovers). It is the things we’ve been trying to improve on since day one. We’ve got to get it better before districts (March 6).”

Darien Nichols had 22 points for Manistique and Colton Hoholik had 12 points, with three triples. Jake Arnold (flu) played about a minute and Marietti said he has been handling player shortage issues (illness and injury) for a month and a half.

Munising also won the jayvee game 72-60.
