Larson to mat finals

MARYSVILLE — Freshman Hunter Larson will represent Escanaba at the state individual wrestling finals after capturing a Division 2 regional wrestling title Saturday at Marysville.

“It’s not common that a freshman wins a regional title,” Escanaba coach Jeff Wright said. “I’m not sure if it’s ever happened for us or not. It speaks to how well he’s wrestled this year.”

Larson won the 130-pound crown by defeating Holly’s Wyatt Scribner 11-1, a 3-2 decision against Goodrich’s Cody Orcutt and pinning Flint Kearsley’s Andy Runstorfer at 2:59 in the finals.

It was a sweet win the finals for Larson, who was pinned by Runstorfer in the district championship match. Orcutt also was ranked fourth in the state.

“(Larson) seems to be wrestling at his best and it’s definitely what we want to see,” Wright said. “It’s what you build for all year to be wrestling at your best this time of the year.”

Esky junior Ean Bevins (145) recorded a 1-2 record at the regional and did not place.

“He’s a junior, so this is something for him to build on going into his senior season,” Wright said about Bevins.

Larson will compete in the state individual finals March 2-4 at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Wright thinks Larson is ready to challenge for a 130-pound crown against the state’s best wrestlers.

“Its obviously his first time going as a freshman,” Wright said. “He’s set himself up good by winning a regional title. He’s excited and looking forward to it — as well as we are — to see how he competes at this highest level.”
