Esky pin trio earn state slots

ESCANABA — Three Escanaba High School bowlers have earned berths in the state tournament. However, the Escanaba and Gladstone bowling teams failed to advance to the state tournament Saturday, but three Upper Peninsula teams did qualify.

Johnny Kositzky of Escanaba qualified for the state individual finals, placing ninth with a 1095 total over six games. Three Marquette bowlers advanced, led by regional champion Liam Peterson with 1297. Hunter Negri was third with 1191 and Mason Garceau was fifth with 1189.

Two Escanaba girls also qualified for the finals, with Maria Backlund sixth at 1001 and Lizzie Taylor seventh at 988. Brooke Fornetti of IM-K was second with 1082 and teammate Maddy Doucette also advanced by taking ninth with 979.

The Esky girls fell 33 pins shy of reaching the state finals in Battle Creek, finishing fourth with 3192. Bay City John Glenn won the regional with 3484 and Iron Mountain-Kingsford was second with 3227 to qualify for the finals. The top three teams advanced.

The Esky boys finished fifth in region 10 with 3163. Marquette won the regional with 3642 and Iron Mountain-Kingsford was second with 3478.

For Escanaba’s boys, Thor Heskin was 25th with 970, Dominic Gibbons was 26th with 964, Jack Worthen was 50th with 823, James Peacock was 56th with 785 and Josh Worthen was 58th with 756.

For Escanaba’s girls, Dakota Cloutier was 16th with 943, Lindsey Juhl was 17th with 940, Kelsey Polequin was 35th with 820 and Mariah Sullivan was 39th with 798.

Gladstone’s boys were in Division 3 at Cheboygan. The Braves placed 11th with 3189.

The Menominee boys finished third with 3669 to advance to the state finals, while Calumet was fifth and Ishpeming sixth. Cheboygan’s boys won with 3733.

Hunter Bublitz of Pinconning took regional honors with 1225, 12 pins ahead of Ishpeming’s Hunter Peterson. Jordan Kesanen of Calumet also advanced to state by tying for third with 1211.

For Gladstone, Bailey Gilbert was 27th with 1038, Alex Miron was 46th with 969, Andrew Lundberg was 56th at 902, Trent Marenger was 57th at 898, Ben Flaminio was 59th with 894 and Jake Wacholz was 63rd with 885.

Gladwin won the girls division with 3481 and Ishpeming was second with 3408 to advance to the state finals. Gladstone does not have a girls team.
