Esky duo earns hockey HM
ESCANABA — The Escanaba Eskymos were blanked for the first and second team in voting by the coaches for the Great Lakes Hockey Conference all-stars.
Calumet and Hancock filled three spots each on the first team and Houghton had three spots on the second team.
Seniors Paul Carne and Garth Wickham were the only Eskymos who earned honorable mention on the all-star squad.
Senior forward Rory Anderson of Calumet was selected player of the year and Dan Giachino of Calumet was coach of the year.
Forward Brent Loukus and defensemen Trevor Johnson and Jack Sturos are Calumet’s first-team all-stars while Hancock’s all-stars are goalie Dawson Kero and forwards Alex Nordstrom and Teddy Randell. Loukus and Nordstrom are sophomores, Randell and Kero are juniors and Johnson and Sturos are seniors.
The second team includes forwrds Jacob Kruse and Dawson McKay and defenseman Kevin Bostwick of Houghton, forward Joey Phillips and defenseman Aydin Frost of Marquette and goalie Nick Voelker of Calumet.
Also earning honorable mention are Ed Beiring of Calumet, Daunte Fortner and Alex Shanks of Kingsford, Lance Kangas and Tanner Givens of Hancock and Tyler Bergwall of Marquette.
