Two poll leaders tumble after losses

Streaking Jets stay No. 1 in D

ESCANABA — A pair of teams tumbled from atop their respective basketball polls in voting done by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association this week.

Negaunee lost twice and fell into a tie for third place in the boys Class A-B-C poll conducted by a six-man panel while Baraga also dropped to third in the Class D girls basketball poll, leaving Forest Park alone atop that division.

Negaunee lost to new poll leader Norway and to No. 2 Marquette. Gladstone, an upset victim at Menominee, slipped a spot to sharing fifth with Sault Ste. Marie.

Baraga lost to fourth ranked Jeffers to tumble from the top.

Three area teams are ranked in the boys Class D poll, led by unchallenged front-runner North Central. The Jets have won 64 straight games and tonight host Mid Peninsula in a quest to equal Chassell’s state-record 65-game win streak. If the Jets win they host Bark River-Harris Friday in an attempt to set a new state record.

BR-H is second but its’ status could change next week after getting drilled 71-47 at Escanaba Monday night. Carney-Nadeau shares No. 4 with Ewen-Trout Creek.

No area girls teams are ranked in the poll.
