Ishpeming girls rout Emeralds

ISHPEMING — The Ishpeming girls basketball team cruised to a 78-25 victory over Manistique here Friday night.

The Hematites used tough defense and pushed the ball as they jumped out to an early lead and never let up in this Mid-Peninsula Conference matchup.

The Emeralds turned the ball over 18 times and Ishpeming took advantage of many fastbreak opportunities.

“We turned the ball over too many times tonight,” said Manistique coach David Winkel.

“We gave up too many fastbreak layups off of turnovers. They were able to break open the game early and cruise to an easy victory.”

Senior Khora Swanson led Ishpeming with 21 points while junior Madigan Johns had 13 points. Senior Marissa Maino and junior Mariah Austin both added 10 for the Hematites.

Junior Madison Berry led the Emeralds with 11 points.

“Madison Berry had a very good game for us,” said Winkel. “She’s small but got into the lane for some layups.”

Manistique hosts Norway Thursday.
