Algera earns honors in testing
APPLETON — A former member of the Escanaba Area Figure Skating Club has earned gold medalist honors.
Joanna Algera, a sophomore at Appleton North High School, became a United States Figure Skating gold medalist in senior moves at Eagle River, Wis.
Her mother, Melinda, indicated approximately 40,000 U.S. figure skating test levels are completed by athletes. Of those, about 1,300 (3 percent) are at the gold or senior level that may require several attempts before succeeding.
Algera began her skating career at age 7 in the Learn To Skate program conducted by the Escanaba Area Figure Skating Club at the Wells Township Sports Complex.
She is the daughter of Chuck and Melinda (LaPalm) Algera of Appleton.
