Cougars hang on, top Gwinn

GWINN — Just when Superior Central became comfortable, Gwinn awakened to make it uneasy for the Cougars here Friday night.

The Cougars managed to hang on after building an eight-point lead and edged Gwinn 33-30 in the non-conference girls basketball game. Gwinn’s Brenna Bruce hit two triples in the final minute to give the Cougars a scare.

Both teams struggled offensively, with each team having three single-digit quarters until Gwinn held a 14-12 edge in the final frame.

“It was pretty good defense,” said Superior Central coach Greg Trowbridge. “It was some of the better defense we’ve played all year. Gwinn is an aggressive team.”

Central played a zone defense and Trowbirdge said “the zone moved real well tonight.”

Emma Rondeau had 12 points for the Cougars (6-4). Central, which lost the jayvee game 63-9, goes to Mid Peninsula Tuesday.
