Braves, Marquette swimmers split

ESCANABA — The Gladstone swimmers finished with mixed results Friday as they split a dual meet with Marquette.

Gladstone’s girls won 90-80, while the boys dropped a 110-59 decision.

“This was a very competitive meet,” said Gladstone coach Tom Desy. “Marquette has been the top team in U.P. swimming the past number of years. The swimmers had some great times and many of the finishes were very close.”

The Gladstone girls, led Liz Stephenson, grabbed the top three places in the 50-yard freestyle race. She was clocked at 28.4 seconds.

Sydney Herioux added a first in 100 freestyle (1:00.41) and Claire Tembruell copped the 100 backstroke (1:06.41).

Matt LeClaire paced the Gladstone boys with victories in 100 backstroke (54.73) and 200 individual medley (2:12.03) and Andrew Dykema added a first in 100 breaststoke (1:07.27).

“The Marquette boys’ team is large with some very good swimmers,” said Desy. “Our boys had some nice swims though, with Matt winning the 200 IM and 100 backstroke against (Marquette’s) Andrew Kilpela. Matt’s battle with Andrew has been very exciting and close the past couple years with most races being within .1 second.

“Andrew Dykema continued his good swimming by winning the 100 breaststroke and getting out-touched in 100 free by .03 second.”

Gladstone hosts Sault Ste. Marie Friday.
