Mustangs drill Cougars’ quint

EBEN — Munising’s man-to-man pressure defense overwhelmed Superior Central Wednesday night as it romped to a 56-13 girls’ basketball victory.

“We just couldn’t handle their pressure,” said Cougars’ coach Greg Trowbridge. “They ran a very aggressive man-to-man and we had a hard time running our offense. Our timing was off. They’re a very good team. They have three 4-year starters, which definitely makes a difference. They play well together.”

Munising led 20-2 after the first quarter and 36-6 at halftime of the Skyline Central Conference affair.

Frankie Mattson scored 16 points for the Mustangs, who improved to 3-0 after their league opener.

Emma Rondeau hit seven for the Cougars (2-1 overall, 1-1 league).

The Cougars committed 34 turnovers.

“No doubt, their press did some damage,” said Trowbridge. “Only, we have to be on the ball. It’s not that we didn’t have some easy shots. We just didn’t make them. Now, we just have to get refocused for Friday.”

The Cougars, who also dropped the jayvee game, host Rapid River Friday. Munising is idle until Dec. 16 when it visits North Central.
