Broncos feast on zone to clip North Dickinson

FELCH — The Bark River-Harris girls reaped the benefits of a big second quarter Friday night as they rolled to a 76-44 basketball triumph over the North Dickinson Nordics.

BR-H led 17-15 after the first quarter and 38-20 at halftime of the Skyline Central Conference outing.

“They were in a zone (defense) and we hit some jump shots and got to the free throw line,” said BR-H coach Josh Eagle.

“I thought North Dickinson ran their fast break real well. They’re a young team, but they played tough. They handled our pressure well.”

Paige Welch led the Broncos (2-1 overall, 2-0 league) with 18 points. Cassidi Stannard added 14 and Kelsey Boucher had 13.

Juliann Wickman scored 18 for the Nordics, who fell to 1-2 after their conference opener.

“We like to go 9-10 players deep,” said Eagle. “Our goal is to wear teams down. We want the girls to trust each other. I’m super proud of them for playing as a team.”

BR-H, which also won the jayvee game 55-40, travels to Big Bay de Noc Tuesday. The Nordics visit Norway Tuesday.
